Lily Chen never thought she would find rock climbing to be a regular component of her exercise schedule. She tried it once.
“It looked terrible, but the thrill was worth it!” she says laughing. She offers her advice here for those interested in climbing on how it has kept her balanced and fit.
1. Embrace the Fear Factor
Although rock climbing might be scary, Lily advises novices not to let anxiety stop them. “The first time you reach the top of a wall, it’s quite empowering,” she notes.
Accept the challenge and keep in mind that even little advancements count as successes.
2. Practice in Core Strength
Climbing challenges more than just upper body strength. Lily says, “Your core does a lot of the work keeping you steady and balanced.” Simple core workouts like planks and leg lifts will increase your stability and help you to feel more under control when climbing.
3. Emphasize technique over power.
Lily discovered that power is only one aspect; technique is also vital. “Good foot placement and balance can make tough climbs feel easier,” she explains. Starting lessons where instructors show methods that enhance efficiency helps climbing gyms make its members more competent on the wall.
4. Honors Every Achievement
Every ascent has fresh hurdles, and Lily advises appreciating the little victories all along. “Every step forward is progress whether it’s finishing a route or just getting a little higher than last time,” she says. A good attitude helps every ascent to seem worthwhile.
5. Join the Climbing Community.
The encouraging community was, Lily discovered, one of the nicest aspects of climbing. “Other climbers are quite motivating,” she notes. The climbing community is full of people that support one another whether you go with friends or meet others at the gym.
Lily’s exercise program has changed and her confidence has grown from rock climbing. She notes, “It’s as much about mental strength as physical.” Thus, perhaps it’s time for you to start that initial step—that which is literally fresh.
