Desserts need not be a guilty delight. Pastry chef turned health activist Emma Steele is demonstrating how to enjoy sweet sweets without extra sugar.
Emma says passionately, “It’s all about using natural sweeteners and wholesome ingredients.” Her best no-added sugar dessert ideas are included here.
1. Banana-Oat Cookies
Emma’s client favourites are her banana-oat biscuits. Mash two ripe bananas then stir with one cup of rolled oats. Include some dark chocolate chips or raisins. “You have a great, guilt-free snack if you bake at 350°F for 15 minutes,” she says.
2. Chia Seed Pudding
Emma calls chia seed pudding a great creamy dessert. Combine one cup of almond milk, one-fourth cup of chia seeds, and a dash of vanilla essence. Chill over night. Emma advises “Top with fresh fruit or shredded coconut for added taste”.
3. Baked Apples
“A classic are baked apples,” Emma notes. Core one apple, toss with cinnamon, then bake until soft at 375°F. Present with a dollop of Greek yoghurt for a consoling treat.
4. Dark Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Emma’s dark chocolate avocado mousse is her favourite treat. Blend a ripe avocado with unsweetened cocoa powder, some almond milk, and a drizzle of honey. She claims, “it’s rich, creamy, and satisfying.”
