Nestled on a picturesque plateau in Yunnan province, the enchanting Old Town of Lijiang has gained fame following the success of the Chinese drama series “Meet Yourself,” starring Liu Yifei. This historical town, situated at an elevation of 2,400 meters, offers a unique glimpse into China’s rich cultural heritage and is a must-visit destination.
Lijiang, also known as Dayan Old Town, once served as a bustling trading hub on the Ancient Tea and Horse Road. Its historical significance was recognized by UNESCO, which designated it a World Heritage Site in 1997. The town’s origins date back to the late Song Dynasty (960-1279), and its ancient cobbled streets, stone bridges, and flower-adorned canals reflect its storied past.
One of Lijiang’s most remarkable features is its sophisticated ancient water supply system. Red lanterns hanging from the buildings add a touch of traditional Chinese charm. The architectural style here combines elements from Naxi, Bai, Tibetan, and Han cultures, with most houses built from wood and tile without the use of nails. Each residence boasts a courtyard filled with trees and flowers, enhancing the town’s beauty.
Dubbed the “Venice of the East,” Lijiang’s intricate canal system includes over 350 bridges, primarily constructed between the 14th and 19th centuries. The Dashi Bridge, located 100 meters east of Sifang Street, is one of the most famous, built by the Mu family during the Ming Dynasty.
Travelers can reach Lijiang Ancient Town from Lijiang Airport by taxi for around 80 yuan (approximately $11). Alternatively, a shuttle bus to Lijiang Blue Sky Inn followed by a short taxi ride is another convenient option.
As evening falls, Lijiang transforms into a vibrant scene illuminated by thousands of lanterns. Restaurants and colorfully decorated landscape areas create a lively atmosphere, providing a stark contrast to the town’s serene daytime ambiance. This enchanting blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty makes Lijiang an unforgettable destination for visitors from around the world.
